United Methodist Action Reach-out Mission by Youth
2005 marks the celebration of 27 years of service provided by U.M. ARMY - where youths and adults of the Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church do home repairs for those less fortunate or unable to help themselves.
Work referrals are provided by the Texas Department of Human Services, United Way and other local agencies. Work groups may build/rebuild handrails, porches, wheelchair ramps, roofs, floors etc. and may also include yard work, painting and visitation.
Requirements include youth who have completed the ninth grade and two adults for each five youth must attend. All expenses are paid by the participants or the church. Transportation is provided for the crews and their tools, to a community at least one hour from their home, by each church. All participants spend one week working on various projects where they are needed most.
Attendance has grown from 36, in the first work camp in 1979, to 1800 in 1996 and is still growing. A great summer project and an experience of a lifetime! Come be a part of an exciting ministry and feel the holy spirit moving through you!
